Construction

Core

This is a twin-layer mattress built up of a 7.5 inch base with a 2.5-inch comfort layer on top. The base is high-density foam, giving good cushioning between the sleeper and the bed frame. The comfort layer is memory foam.

Cover

The cover on this mattress is a soft cotton velour fabric that has had an antimicrobial treatment. It’s also tightly woven enough to help deter dust mites. It feels pleasant and if you don’t use a mattress protector it’s comfortable beneath a sheet. Compared to the bamboo cover used on Lucid’s 12-inch mattress it doesn’t allow quite as much airflow though, so it tends to be slightly warmer to sleep on. This could become uncomfortable in hot weather.

On the plus side, the cover is close fitting and tidy and zips off easily for washing.

Comfort

Most users rated this mattress very highly for comfort. Its double-layer construction doesn’t give quite as much support as a three-layer model, but the comfort layer is relatively thick at 2.5 inches and molds well to the body.

This mattress is firmer than most, and if you prefer a softer bed it may not be the right choice. Some reviewers did say it becomes softer after a few months’ use. If you like more support it’s probably ideal. One thing to be aware of, which caught out at least one reviewer, is that when the mattress unrolls from its packaging the bottom surface is facing up. It needs to be flipped when it’s placed on the bed or you will be sleeping on the base layer, not the memory foam.

Several reviewers noted that they suffered from back problems and that this mattress let them sleep much better than other models. If you suffer from skeletal or muscular issues the exceptional support would be a good reason to consider the 10-inch Lucid mattress.

Ventilation

Like all Lucid foam mattresses, this one is made from open-cell foam. Closed-cell foam, which is often used in lower-priced mattresses, blocks airflow and traps heat very effectively. This is good in winter but can quickly become uncomfortably warm in hotter weather. The open-cell foam allows the heated air to disperse from around your body. Because of the efficiency of the open-cell foam, Lucid hasn’t added any other ventilation features to this model.

The velour cover doesn’t allow as much air through as a bamboo cover does, so this mattress is slightly warmer than Lucid’s 12 inch one. If you have trouble sleeping when it’s too warm the 12-inch model may be a better bet for you, but if you live in a cooler climate this one is perfectly adequate.

Features

Like all Lucid mattresses, this one is made from CertiPUR-US foam. That means the material is certified-free from lead, mercury, and other heavy metals, as well as potentially dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde. That’s an important feature if you have young children. It’s also made using ozone-safe methods; no CFCs or other ozone-damaging gas is used to make the foam.

This mattress arrives vacuum packed for compactness. When unpacked you should leave it for several hours – ideally a day – to settle and expand. You may also find a slight chemical smell at first; the packaging doesn’t allow this to disperse. It will fade quickly once it’s unpacked though.

This mattress comes with a 25-year warranty.

Conclusion

This mattress is fractionally less comfortable than Lucid’s excellent 12-inch model, but it still performs extremely well – especially at this low price. The cover is very comfortable and we like how easy it is to remove for cleaning. Very firm foam means this may not be for those who like a soft mattress but it’s great if you like more support and definitely one to consider if you suffer from back or joint issues – it will hold you in a stress-free position while you sleep. The long warranty gives you confidence in your investment, too.
