Lucid Memory Foam Mattress (review)

Lucid 8″ Gel Memory Foam Mattress (review)

Lucid 8 inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress

The LUCID line from LinenSpa is excellent all around, but the 8″ thick option offered a lot of value. This mattress is a great starter memory foam mattress with an excellent price point.

Lucid’s range of memory foam mattresses is distributed by LinenSpa and available through Amazon. They come in a range of thicknesses and offer a choice of two or three-layer construction. All of these mattresses are frequently praised for their competitive pricing, giving performance usually associated with much more expensive models. The entry-level is the 8 Inch Memory Foam Mattress.

Size

The 8 Inch Memory Foam Mattress can be bought to suit the most popular bed sizes. There are six different sizes available:

  • Twin
  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

Construction

Core

This mattress is made up of two layers of foam, like the 10-inch model. In this case, the base is 6 inches thick and made of high-density open-cell foam. This is very firm and springy, giving a solid base.  It’s strong enough to work on a slatted bed if the slats aren’t too widely spaced – we would recommend using a board under the mattress if the gaps between the slats are more than two inches.

On top of the base layer is two inches of memory foam. This layer could do with being half an inch thicker but generally performs well. It’s a soft and doughy foam that deforms easily to suit the shape of your body.

Cover

The cover is made from lightly quilted microfiber material. It’s extremely comfortable to the touch, and just as comfortable through a sheet if you don’t use a mattress protector. It fits neatly and can also be easily removed for washing.

Overall quality seems very high, with a lot of attention to detail. This has the appearance of a much more expensive item.

Comfort

For an 8 inch mattress, this is very comfortable; most reviewers were impressed at how well it shaped to their bodies. Despite the relatively thin comfort layer it was extremely effective at absorbing any traces of movement and preventing people from being disturbed by their partner.

Like the other Lucid mattresses, we reviewed this one is very firm and perhaps not ideal for people who like a softer bed. On the other hand a few people did find that it’s not firm enough. It does seem to be slightly softer than the thicker models from the same company. If you have back problems, or just like a really firm bed, you may prefer the 10 inch model.

Ventilation

Memory foam mattresses have a reputation for trapping heat close to your body, which can make for an uncomfortable night in a warm room. Various techniques have been used by manufacturers to deal with this problem, ranging from ventilation holes to impregnating the foam with gel or even charcoal. Lucid prefer to change the foam itself, and like all their memory foam mattresses this one uses open-cell foam. Traditional closed cell foam doesn’t allow air to flow through, which is the main cause of the heat buildup. Open cell foam, on the other hand, is permeable. This allows heated air to flow away from the body and keep the temperature down.

The cover is tightly woven microfiber and should restrict airflow, but in fact, this doesn’t seem to be a problem. It’s possible that its lightly quilted material allows more air to move around than you would expect.

Features

When this mattress arrives you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve been sent the wrong box – it looks much too small to have a full-sized mattress inside. Open it up and everything becomes obvious. Lucid vacuum packs their mattresses, making them much more compact and easier to transport. The heavy plastic packing also protects them in transit. It does take a bit of time for the foam to expand to its full size after unpacking though, so don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t reach its full thickness instantly. The packaging also tends to seal in a slight chemical odor. This should dissipate within a few hours. It’s best to unpack the mattress then leave it for a day before making up the bed on top of it; that will allow plenty of time for both expansion and airing.

This mattress comes with a 25-year warranty.

Conclusion

As an entry-level memory foam mattress, this has a lot going for it. It’s well made and quite comfortable, and the ventilation is adequate. The removable cover is very high quality and seems to assist with ventilation, which combined with the open cell foam means this mattress isn’t as warm to sleep on as some. Given the price it’s an extremely affordable way to get a memory foam mattress for a larger bed. If you’re looking for a smaller size Lucid’s 10-inch model might be a better choice though; the difference in price is very low, only $10 for the twin size.
